Freelance Journalist Interview with Sally Percy

Sally Percey

I once interviewed Michael Barrymore when I worked on a daily newspaper in New Zealand and he kissed me on the cheek!

About your journalism

What do you write about?

I write predominantly about business, finance, treasury, accounting, tax and sustainability, but I have also written on a variety of subjects including social media, stress, English crafts people and outsourcing.

Where are we likely to see your work?

The Treasurer, CFO World, Accounting and Business, Financial Risks Today. I edit The Treasurer on a freelance basis and I was previously editor of Accountancy magazine.

What’s the most memorable work you’ve done?

I once interviewed Michael Barrymore when I worked on a daily newspaper in New Zealand and he kissed me on the cheek!

What interview or feature would you love the chance to do?

The Duchess of Cambridge – who wouldn’t?

About you and PRs

Where do you source ideas for articles?

I look at press releases, Twitter, other publications that are similar to the ones that I write for and national newspapers. I also find conferences and events are a good source of ideas.

How can PRs be useful to you?

They send useful press releases and survey results. I particularly love surveys. They are also really good at fixing me up with expert comment. I like them to send me feature article suggestions for The Treasurer, the magazine that I edit. When you’re an editor, you really appreciate other people coming up with ideas – you can’t do it all on your own.

How and when do you like them to get in touch?

I like them to send me emails – they can contact me whenever they have something I might be interested in. I look at all the press releases that I get, even if only briefly.

Do you find press conferences, trips, parties and other events useful or an interruption?

Useful – it’s always good to meet people in person and that’s how I get some of my best ideas.

If you could make one change to the way PRs deal with you, what would it be?

Email me, please don’t telephone me.

About you

How would you pay the bills if you weren’t a journalist?

I have absolutely no idea! I love what I do. I can’t imagine doing anything else.

If we gave you £1000, how would you spend it?

I’d save it for a deposit for a house where I live in Sussex (that’s the sort of answer you get from a financial journalist!)

Do you tweet? Why, why not?

Yes, I do. I love tweeting! It’s fun and a good way to interact with readers.

What books are on your bedside table, magazines in your bag, or blogs on your screen?

I’m currently reading 'The Descendants' by Kaui Hart Hemmings. For relaxation, I love reading celebrity magazines like Heat, Closer and Reveal.
